[INVESTMENT] MEMO - 31.05.2021

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Today is the last day of May 2021. And I have been using eToro as my platform for investing in USA and Hong Kong companies since May 2020.

May 2021 is the one year anniversary of me using eToro to invest companies listed in USA and Hong Kong.

CRYPTOCURRENCY

Lately in may 2021, I looked into and invested in cryptocurrency. The reason of my investment into cryptocurrency is simple, I strongly believe that XRP can potentially turn into a valuable “currency” in the next few years because cryptocurrency may be potentially the future due to its demand and innovation.

Though governments all the around the world have been regulating and limiting the usage of cryptocurrency to the prevent the act of money laundering or other illegal activity, one cannot deny the fact that there are demand in cryptocurrency usage (in legal and ethical manner). Every new innovation requires time for the society to adapt and regulate. 

CONCLUSION

To mitigate its high volatility of cryptocurrency, I only used 2.5% of total value (at that material time) of my portfolio to invest in XRP. Though XRP in my portfolio is currently down by 40%, such risk has been mitigated through my others investment in companies shares investment.

RESULTS

Since the inception of our fund in May 2020, we have been up close to 43.11%. We are still able to maintain our risk level at 4 as can be seen from the “average risk score”.

[INVESTMENT] MEMO – 25.05.2021

ACTIVITIES

For the past week, I made some adjustment to my portfolio. I have added the following positions:- 

1. NETFLIX
2. DISNEY
3. VISA

I have invested in the following new companies as well:- 

1. COUPANG
2. INTUITIVE SURGICAL, INC
3. BAOZUN INC

I have always been looking at INTUITIVE SURGICAL for quite some time now and I strongly believe this is a company that which I can own for long term.

RISK

As you may have aware that I have invested in a cryptocurrency, XRP last week. And cryptocurrency is having a rough week due to its high beta. My XRP is currently down close to 30% and so far this is my biggest paper loss.

However, I am not too worried about this paper loss because before my investment in XRP I have already made a calculated risk in this cryptocurrency investment. As you all can see that my allocation to this investment is only about 2.5% out of my total portfolio value and I will keep the portion of cryptocurrency out of my whole portfolio as low as possible. My intention in of buying XRP Ripple is to hold it for quite some time.

RESULTS

Since the inception of our fund in May 2020, we have been up close to 40.69%. We are still able to maintain our risk level at 4 as can be seen from the “average risk score”.

[INVESTMENT] MEMO - 14.05.2021

Indeed a rough week for S&P500, NASDAQ and DOW JONES.

WATCHLIST

Over the past 12 months i have been enlisting companies that I feel comfortable with into my watchlist. They are companies both listed in HKSE and USA.

HKSE: Meituan, Xiaomi, PingAn

USA: Netflix, Microsoft, Disney

COMPANIES

Due to this week’s rough declines, I have taken this opportunity to add more position to my portfolio. I have added more fund to PingAn and Netflix which I strongly believe they are going to do very well in the next 5 to 10 years.

Apart from that, I have opened a few new positions in Meituan, Microsoft and DISNEY. I may talk about them in details as to why I invested in these great companies. In short, the main reason of my investment is that all these companies have a strong business moat and market share in their respective industry.

I may add more position to DISNEY in the near future. It has just released its earning results and it has missed on its subscribers and revenue. However, I believe DISNEY is able to utilise and monetise its IP strongly once again when the economy is opening up.

RISK

Further to the above, I also allocated a small portion of the fund to invest in a cryptocurrency. The fund I used to invest in cryptocurrency is only about 2.5% out of the value of my portfolio. 

I bought XRP Ripple and intent to hold for quite some time. This is the first time ever I touched on cryptocurrency. I fully understand the risk behind such move and I intent to keep the portion of cryptocurrency out of my whole portfolio as low as possible.

[INVESTMENT] MEMO - 03.05.2021 on eToro

I invested another new great company this week. Further to that, I also added more position to a long-standing Chinese company to my portfolio. If you have followed me, the great company I mentioned above is ...... NETFLIX.

NETFLIX

Its share price has dropped around 10% due to the reason that it is expected to add 6 million new subscribers in the last quarter. But when the results are released, it only added 4 million new subscribers. The management explained that the reason for the slowdown in member growth was because of the significant pace of signups during year 2020. As people anticipated being cooped up or locked down at home during the pandemic, they signed up to Netflix as their home entertainment.

The explanation given by the management does make sense. If we look at the numbers, I am actually not too worried because over the past few quarters Netflix have had achieved organic growth. Netflix also anticipates free cash flow in year 2021 at break-even and to turn positive in 2022. Fundamentally, for now, such expectation is still valid.

Netflix is my long-term investment in this platform and I will hold it forever unless there are any substantial changes to its fundamental.

To me, Netflix is the future of television network.

PING AN

I have added positions in a Chinese company called PIGNAN. Its share price has slipped close to 10% also since my last investment.

The slipped of share price was mainly because it took a hit from its exposure to a troubled property developer, taking a slice off its first-quarter profits.

Though PingAn suffered its first fall in annual net profit since 2008, its fundamental is still rock solid. Therefore, I seized this opportunity to add more position to this company for my long-term investment in greater China insurance development and prospect.

Since the inception of our fund in May 2020, we have been up close to 42.51%. April 2021 was a great month as we were up 6% solely in April 2021. We are still able to maintain our risk level at 4 as can be seen from the “average risk score”.
